Unanswered Prayers

There is a girl / woman who I know who doesn't want to pierce her ears for whatever reason. Over the years, as I go through jewelry bags, I have given her cute clip on earrings. I see her wearing earrings I have given her many times in the past.

I dropped off two pair of earrings today, and while standing on the porch of that home, I looked around and remembered that when we first moved here, we made a bid on that home as there was nothing to purchase as there was a housing shortage. We ended up living in a motel for months as we couldn't find a place and made bids on three different homes that were for sale. We didn't get any of the homes.

The home they live in, is one of the homes we bid on and didn't get. I really didn't like the layout of the home but were were just desperate enough to get out of the motel that we made several bids on the house even though it had some big issues we didn't like. The basement windows were not code and we knew we couldn't put kids in those rooms. It also didn't have a garage, and the sidewalks were a mess.

Because the market was so tight, we couldn't afford the price they were asking for the home. A bit later, we had a friend tell us they couldn't afford the home they had agreed to purchase, so I called the owner and said that my friend said we could buy it if we wanted. The owner of this home said she had three other people in line to purchase it but since my friend said we could have it, she allowed us to look at it and then said we could buy it. We took the owners to dinner and gave them a down payment that night.

When I look at the condition of my home and the condition of the other home, I feel so blessed to have NOT gotten that home when we bid on it. The home I have now has been such a blessing for my family.

I was standing on their porch waiting for them to come to the door and the screen was open and I waited for quite a long time and in those few moments I noticed many things on the house and was giving gratitude for my home. It is so interesting to look back and see God's hand in my life back then.

As I was leaving after giving the mom the earring for the daughter, I had the Garth Brooks song "Unanswered Prayers" come into my head. The lyrics are below:

Just the other night at a hometown football gameMy wife and I ran into my old high school flameAnd as I introduced them the past came back to meAnd I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be
She was the one that I'd wanted for all timesAnd each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mineAnd if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back thenI'd never ask for anything again
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayersRemember when you're talkin' to the man upstairsThat just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't careSome of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers
She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreamsAnd I could tell that time had changed meIn her eyes too it seemedWe tried to talk about the old daysThere wasn't much we could recallI guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all
And as she walked away and I looked at my wifeAnd then and there I thanked the good LordFor the gifts in my life
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayersRemember when you're talkin' to the man upstairsThat just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't careSome of God's greatest gifts are unanswered
Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

It just was about that house rather than an old girlfriend. I know I am so blessed to have such a lovely home on a quiet street as theirs is on a busy street. The list of differences goes on an on. I am very grateful to my Father in Heaven for always watching over me.

Have a blessed day!

Sprinklers, Swamp Coolers and Heaters - Oh My

This past week we had three cold days so much so that plants in the yard were freezing and my furnace was running.

It got so hot the next three days that I had fans blowing air in the house and it was still hot. I worried about my grass dying with the heat. I spent the day Saturday getting my sprinklers running. It was really hot as I had to dig up two broken sprinklers and adjust them, but that is better than others years.

I knew I would need to get the swamp cooler in as it has been so hot and the fan was just blowing in hot air. When I went to buy the cedar mats for the cooler, the worker at the hardware store in town told me that what they got in was all they were going to get and I should make what sizes they had work because he is having a hard time getting anything in brass, and any wood made products or anything that takes processing to make.

With that information, I bought the closest sizes to what I needed and got home and put them in. It was SO hot in the house and I was in such a hurry to put it in that I forgot to run it outside with the window closed to blow out any dirt from the winter.

I put it in and turned it on only to get a face full of mineral dust and leaves. I had to dust and vacuum the house after putting it in. I finally got it in and filled and it was so nice to have it cool down in just a few minutes! My yellow grass is now starting to perk up as well.

I am so blessed to have sprinklers, a swamp cooler, and a furnace! God has blessed me greatly.

Have a blessed day!

Toxic Air - Oxygen Sensor and a Brilliant Brother

I have shared recently that I realized that I probably have methane gas coming up through plumbing in the basement that never gets used.

I have a Genius level brother who figured out a way to check the air in my home. He borrowed an oxygen sensor and wrote a program with a data logger to go off and sense the air in my home every minute or two.

He sent it to me as we don't live close, and then spent time to help me set it up downloading apps on my phone and computer so I could look at the changes in the oxygen levels in my home.

I set it up on the floor in the basement, and then the ceiling to determine if their was more or less oxygen in either area. Without fail, the oxygen on the ground level was higher than at ceiling level.

RADON gas is heavier than oxygen which would have made the oxygen level on the ground LOWER than at the ceiling area. However METHANE gas is lighter than oxygen and so the methane gathers near the ceiling.

Moving the sensor around the basement let me know that methane was coming into the house along with oxygen through the pipes as my house is so air tight.

After I could tell there was methane in the house, I put water in all those unused drains and then put the oxygen sensor around the basement again, and now, plugging up those drains, the oxygen level near the ground went down, and the levels near the ceiling were higher!

I moved the sensor upstairs, and it was interesting to see that when the furnace went on, the oxygen levels went down quickly, and when the furnace went off, the levels increased just as dramatically! Because the Radon is heavier than Oxygen, when the intake for the furnace goes off, it pulls radon directly from the basement floor as that is where the main big intake for the furnace is, the hallway in the basement.

So, when you look at the sensor toward the end of the graph, you can see lots of up and down as the radon makes it go up and then it drops when the furnace goes off.

If things hadn't changed when I put water in the drains, I could say that the problem could have not been a gas, however, when things changed after putting water in the drains, it showed that it had to be some type of lighter gas. If there was just methane and not Radon, the levels should have balanced to stay the same. However, it isn't the same, this gas is heavier than air.

So, I now need to work on finding someone to put in a heat recovery system vent in my home. It would be so nice to feel better and feel like I had the energy to get things done!

I am so blessed to have a brilliant brother who can put together these type of things to make figuring out what my problems are so much easier!

Have a blessed day!

Door To Door Sales - Good and Bad

Lately, there have been a plethora of door-to-door salesmen in our neighborhood.

I was resting on a recliner in the front room of my home when a somewhat beat car pulled up and parked across the street from my home. A guy that looked sketchy climbed out with a clipboard and approached my home.

All I could think was I was getting served with some legal papers, but that is usually an off duty officer in uniform, so then I thought maybe he was selling something, but even then, I couldn't imagine what he would be selling dressed as he was.

He knocked and I thought about not opening it, but I was in a chair in front of the window so figured he may have seen me. I answered the door and he told me he was a "neighbor" living in the neighborhood. I did recognize his parents name, but had never seen him before.

He asked if I wanted to hear about solar panels on my home but when he opened his mouth a bit wider on some words, I could see that he had a word tattooed on the tops of his teeth! I thought that was super creepy and I found myself stepping back as he stood close to the door on the porch. It was quite disturbing and thought that I didn't feel comfortable with him in the house alone with me even if I did want solar on my home.

The next afternoon, I had just gotten out of the shower, and still had my hair wrapped in a towel when there was a knock at my door. I opened the door as there was a man in a construction lime green jacket who was on my porch with a lanyard on his neck. I thought maybe it was gas or power needing access to my back yard as that has happened many times over the year.

He introduced himself and had stepped back onto the top stair which put me more at ease. He then introduced his friend who was standing about 10 feet back on the sidewalk. He then said he had met with my neighbor who he said by name about putting solar panels on their home. He then asked what my monthly power bills were and that they could put them on my home with no cost to me.

The sales pitch lasted for about 2 minutes until I told him my power bills and how my house is brick with triple pane windows. He said it wouldn't be cost effective for me to do it then.

They then left walking to the middle of the street looking at their phone in the street for a minute. I am sure they were looking at the names of the next home and I am sure they used my name to get a conversation going at the next home.

As they left, I thought about the difference between the two different companies and the salesmen that approached me.

Them giving me space at the door. Them wearing a "uniform" so bright you could see them clearly so I would be at ease that a neighbor would have seen them in the street and that also put me at ease thinking a murderer or thief would be more dressed like the first salesman that came.

Them having lanyards with the company name on it. They parked their nice car in front of an empty lot on the street instead of someones home and the car didn't make you look twice. They came in twos, but stood back with one nearer the street so you didn't feel like they were going to rush you at the door.

Using the neighbors name, not that I like that tactic, but it does make them seem neighborly. Being dressed well, but not over dressed with a nice haircut and shave.

Not that any of those things can't be faked and Ted Bundy looked like a normal nice guy, but there was such a contrast between the two that it make me recognize how much power a first impression can have. It is worth taking notice how much control we have to make a good impression when meeting others.

Methane - Radon - Off Gassing Oh My

I fixed the issue I had with methane gas a year or so ago having a sponge / foam in the sewer vent.
Here is a link to that.

For years I have had issues with something when the furnace goes off. When the air intake goes off before the furnace starts blowing, I will have heart palpitations. I have been talking with many different people recently about how air tight my home is and the things that it could be, and how to fix the issue.

When I had the energy audit years ago, they found my house to be the tightest they had tested ever as long as any of them had been doing that task. I talked to my brother and for some reason, when I thought of methane coming into the house, I always thought about the bathrooms that we use as if you have basement bathrooms that don't get used, methane can get into the house.

For some reason, I never thought about the larger bathtub and two sinks that we NEVER use. The water is turned off to the two sinks and the big tub gets used once a year or so. I make sure to run water into the regular bathroom drains but can't believe I never thought to run water in the big bathroom.

I think that all those drains being dry all the time, gas can escape into the basement and when the furnace intake comes on, it draws air from those drains as the house is such a tight home and when I turn on the swamp cooler in the summer, the bathroom fans in across the house blow out and I can't open the door without much strength as there is pressure in the home.

I believe that the furnace is causing a vacuum / negative pressure / suction effect. I contacted the national Radon site and talked to them asking if I did have radon gas, what would happen with my air tight house and the man that is in charge said that if they put a Radon Mitigation System on my air tight home, that it can create even more of a negative pressure situation and pull more radon into the home.

I talked to him about "off gassing" as well and he didn't think that was what I was dealing with, but we talked of other ways to fix the problem.

Currently I am using box fans to air out the house daily. My brother is an expert in sensors and data loggers, and is rigging a logger to detect the air in the house at regular intervals. He will be sending it soon so I can see if the gas in the house is thicker than air and if the house oxygen levels drop, that means that the negative pressure is suctioning either methane or radon into the house.

If the situation is off gassing, I don't think anything will show, however, this situation has been happening since before I put the new memory foam carpet padding down, so hopefully this sensor would be able to detect anything going on.

I will start running water down those large bathroom drains every few weeks to keep water in the trap. It would be nice to figure out why I am so tired and what is causing my health problems!

Have a blessed day!

I Finally Bought Home Security Cameras

I have had some issues in the past with someone breaking in. It hasn't been often, but has happened.

My girls have offered to get me cameras for awhile now, but I finally just decided my peace of mind was worth the money it would cost to get them.

I don't want to post pictures of where they are obviously, but I am just grateful that this technology is available now.

I don't travel often and really like to be home, but I also like that in an emergency my girls can access the cameras to see if I am OK, and I can access it when I am away as well.

It is amazing to me how inexpensive these cameras have gotten and how small they are so that people don't even know they are there. It makes you want to be on your best behavior wherever you are as you really could be being videotaped wherever you are!

Have a blessed day!!

Troubleshooting and Fixing My Garage Light

Last October, I had a friend come and put another light in my garage.

My garage has always been dark and over the years I went from a fixture with one bulb to one with two bulbs, then three bulbs and it was still quite dark.

I contacted my handyman, and he told me he was really busy now as with the hot and cold weather, people still want to get their furnaces worked on and the air-conditioner working when the days are hot. He said he was super busy and wasn't sure when he could get to it.

Here is the post where I talk about putting them all in last November.

I tested the bulbs in other fixtures to make sure the problem wasn't the bulbs. I am lucky enough to have a brother that is an electrician. I asked what he thought the problem was, and he said it could be a loose wire in the fixture or the ballast. I tested the power to the fixture and it was going to the fixture and since my friend that put it up is an electrician, I figured it wouldn't be that.

I then decided to just replace the ballast, but realized that my new ballast was longer than the ballast that was in the fixture so I had to take down part of the fixture to be able to move the screw that holds the ballast in. It was in a hard spot between shelving and stacked items that need to be moved so I can texture behind them, so I was leaning a bit on the ladder which was a bit stressful.

I was able to cut the wires and splice the new ballast in and was praying that the light would work, as if it didn't work with the new ballast, I wouldn't have known what else to try.

The new ballast worked and I was so hot and dripping sweat. I had only had a few hours sleep the night before and it took it out of me.

I was so happy to have a working light in the garage again! I have been wanting to continue working on my garage clean out and texturing the walls, but being sick and with my health issues, I haven't worked on it in months now.

I am so excited to have shelving in there and hope I continue to get it cleaned out and looking good. The best part of the whole thing, was that it didn't cost me anything!

Have a blessed day!

Can You Tell Me What This Is - Interesting Pottery Find

Last week I was shopping at a second hand store and I saw this cute little "thing" and asked all the employees at the store if they knew what the pot was.
I thought about it holding toothpicks, but they would fall out the sides and there is no way to make them come out of the mouth. When I asked the employees, they said the exact same thing. It was funny!

I had to buy it just to see if I could find out what it is used for as it is so unique.

I am wondering if one of my friends on here can tell me what it is and what it is used for as I have no idea. I can't read the potters name very well either.

It amazes me that potters work so hard on their items and then use symbols, stamps or messy signatures to sign their work making it hard to attribute the work to them. I don't know why as if I took the time to create something, I would want to take the credit for the item.

If you have any ideas, please let me know in the comments!

Have a blessed day!

There Must Be A Time Limit on Faucet Parts

I shared in a post over the past few months about ordering parts for my faucets. Here is a link to that post.

After I got the first part, it was still dripping from the tub faucet as I think the cartridge lost a washer. Before I ordered another one, the faucet in my bathroom started leaking and needed a new handle. After I replaced those two cartridges, the faucet in the main bath started dripping, so I took the first one they sent and replaced a washer on it and then used that one in the main bathroom sink faucet.

My kitchen faucet is a Delta, and I finally got the parts from them. After I got all the parts from Moen and Delta, I fix all the faucets. I go to clean up the basement for company this past weekend. I rinse out the tub, and the faucet down in the tub starts leaking!!!

Within 2 months, every single faucet in my home from either brand has started leaking! It has been many years since I changed them out, but that is so weird how all of them started dripping within those two months.

I now have to start the process of ordering a new cartridge for that basement tub faucet. I can't believe how they all went at once.

I pray they all stay working as I really want to be done with plumbing issues. In the past six months, I have had two mini floods, had to fix the drain in the shower, cut the laundry room ceiling to re-glue the drain pipe for the shower, fix a flood in the upstairs bathroom, and replace all these cartridges!

I hope you have a plumbing free blessed day!

"Lets Read" - Lengthy Scary Stories Podcast - Sharing My Own Scary Stories - Part 4

I have two stories relating to dryers. One scary story relating to a dryer was when I was about 9 or 10. We lived in a 100 year old mansion home downtown in a major city. It was a four story home with a stone foundation. The laundry room was in the basement of this home and I never liked being in that basement. It was dark and I always worried about spiders.
Being one of 8 children, we had LOTS of clothing and I was tasked to help with the laundry since the time I was 6, I was in the rotation for doing dishes and laundry. I remember washing the dished and not being tall enough to do the dishes without the water running down my arms and getting my shirt wet.

I was down in the basement when I walked into the laundry room when I saw flames coming out of the dryer. I went screaming up in the kitchen and the family ran down to unplug the dryer and use an extinguisher to put out the dryer.

Since that time, I have been a bit stressed at times on running the dryer when no one is home, and on having extinguishers near the appliances in the home. My biggest issue has always been not having anything on the floor so that if there were a fire, we wouldn't trip on anything trying to get out, and that if firemen needed to come in, their path would be unrestricted. My girls all know this about me not leaving things on the floor or in the hallways ever.

The second scary story with the dryer happened when I was 15ish. We lived in a upper end suburb neighborhood with larger houses. People would call our house the "white house" as it had columns in the front and was a large home as we had 8 children in our family.

With 8 children, you would guess there were always mounds of laundry. As I shared before, we all had to do chores and I did laundry from an early age. With that, we would pull a load of dried clothes out and stick it on top of the dryer and sometimes there would be three of four loads stacked on top of the dried.

With that, of course clothes would fall down behind the dryer and we would get stacks of things behind the dryer. I was (and am) fairly responsible and would often be the one to clean up areas of the house. One night, I had been out biking or doing track team or something and was wearing short running shorts. Some items had fallen down behind the drier as someone may have pulled out a load I was doing of my own items or something, so the way we had devised to get those items, was we had a metal hanger we would stretch in the bottom middle down so we could make a hook out of it by holding on to the middle lower stretch area and hook the clothes behind the dried with the hanger hook part.

I shared that our house was a large square "white house" and on the back was a large veranda running the length of the upstairs with a staircase OUTSIDE so we could come out the back of the house on the main floor and walk up the stairs to sit on the veranda or go into the house using two sets of sliding glass doors that were upstairs off that veranda.

One of the doors entered into the family room, and the other set was in the laundry room! I also forgot to mention that our house was situated on a corner, so everyone coming into the neighborhood would wind around the labyrinth of roads in the neighborhood to the country club that was about three houses down from our home. So, it was the main road to the country club and was heavily traveled!

I happened to be "backside" up, kneeling on the dryer, with my head buried behind the dryer pulling items up from behind the dryer and remember I was wearing loose, short red running shorts with white trim, and I was a thin, cute girl at the time. My sister happened to walk past the laundry room taking a quick glance at me going to her bedroom and did a double take and screamed!

Of course I am head down backside up on top of the dryer so her scream disarmed me in that awkward pose and she was screaming, "Lock the door, lock the door!" I jump off the dryer and hurriedly lock the laundry room door asking "why?"

The dryer was exactly next to the glass sliding door so it was the door, then me on the dryer! She told me when she walked past, she thought she saw my reflection in the door but then looked again and there was a man with his hand on the door handle looking at my "Backside"!

I look outside and I see a man running through out backyard, and climbs over our wooden fence and jumps into a car that was parked on the side of the road facing the house and drove off. From the street, my backside in red was like a lighthouse for any pervert that drove past in the dark since the blinds in that room were often broken with 8 kids going in and out! The door was NOT locked as with that many kids going in and out, it just wasn't. There were a few times that we had heard people breaking in, had things stolen, and once at that home, a man walked in and my mother found him in our kitchen.

We were both really shaken up but we locked the door and put a stick in the door track and figured that was the end of it.

About then minutes later, we are in my sisters room talking about it. The windows were open as were the blinds on the bottom half of the window to let air in as it was hot. A man walks up our circular driveway and as my sisters room is on that same end of that house but in the front, he could hear us talking through the window.

He called out to us and tried to get us to come down and talk to him. My sister told me to go get my dad and older brothers out of bed as we were really scared. How determined and crazy must a person to be to approach a home with many cars in the driveway and talk to us after being seen on the back deck / veranda!

He overheard my sister and started running off the property to his car which was parked on the opposite corner to our corner home. My father was asleep and by the time I got him awake and he told me to get my brothers, the man was long gone. They took several cars and went around the neighborhood looking for his car but came back empty handed. We didn't call the police thinking that he was gone and we couldn't tell anything other than he was wearing a baseball cap and was tall and darkish.

We always made sure the doors were locked and blocked after that time as I was terrified that he would come back as he was so bold! Flash forward a few months, I am asleep and my sister was was not sleeping in her room anymore, my room was at the end of the hall, so for me to get to either the staircase or outside, I had to pass the laundry room.

I wake in the middle of the night to someone lifting that door and trying to unlock it and wiggle it enough against the stick in the track to get in! He wasn't trying to get into the doors at the other end of the veranda by the family room, but was trying to get into the laundry room which meant that if he got it, I was trapped! I said a prayer wondering what to do as if I walked to the stairs, he would see me in the house and know exactly which room was mine! I kept my blinds down all the time since the dryer event, but the laundry blinds were broken, so he would for sure see me and if he got the door open before I got passed, I could be running right into him! I prayed and felt to turn my stereo on really loud so he would know someone was awake. It worked and I remember peeking out of my blinds and seeing someone fleeing the yard.

If I had a phone in my room back then, I would have called 911, but the phone was beyond the laundry room down the hall at the other side so I didn't dare go out of my locked room! I forgot to share that I always had my door closed and locked when I slept! When I went to New Zealand as an exchange student, my host mothers didn't understand why I always had my bedroom door closed and / or locked!

I think that to this day, it is part of the reason I don't sleep well. I hadn't realized until I gave my dog away how she helped me sleep soundly because I knew she would bark if anyone or anything was a threat. The night she left, I couldn't sleep and realized this would be a problem for me. I don't sleep well and that was when I started gaining weight and being tired all the time because I think until my kids were off at school, I would "listen" all night to make sure they were safe. Once they were gone, I could sleep better / deeper.

I always felt that GOD was protecting me as if my sister hadn't walked past at that exact moment, I could have been knocked out, or abducted and no one would have known. The door may or may not have been locked and he could have come in later and taken me while sleeping etc. It was just really PROVIDENCE that she saw that man!

My girls know how protective I am of them, and because of this and other situations in my past, I have been protective of them. But, there are always situations you can't train people to look out for as there are just some really evil people in the world.

Have a Blessed Day!

Delta Verses Moen For Warranty on Faucet Parts - Moen is the CLEAR Winner

I have owned my home for over 20 years. In that time, I have replaced faucets. Moen and Delta both have warranty claims on their products. In past years, they were much more open on their parts and warranty, but more recently it is getting harder and harder to get warranty parts.

Moen has been much easier in getting parts. I just took pictures of the faucets and the handle that had the style name on it. I got a reply within a day and they mailed the parts within a few days.

Delta, I had the box still from my kitchen faucet. I sent in photos of the faucet, the Delta inscription showing, and I sent in a photo of the box with the upc and style on it.

It took Delta a few days to reply and I was SHOCKED that even with the photos of the faucet, and the box with production date and upc they wanted a date of purchase and month before they would give me a part for the leak!

I sent back more photos and made up a date of purchase about five months after the manufacture date with a few photos of the box showing their claims for warranty.

I find it frustrating that they want a receipt when they fade after time and you can't read the numbers on them. However, the box has all the information on it. Funny that they would take one over the other. Obviously if I have photos of the faucet and the box, I purchased the faucet.

I have yet to get a reply from the Delta company on if they will honor the warranty without a receipt. But, I did get notification today that Moen has shipped several parts! I sent in my requests on the same day and time so for my part, I think I will be buying Moen products in the future!

Have a blessed day!
